Widford Lodge Pre School

Early Years Foundation Stage

Children develop quickly in the early years and high quality learning combined with first class development and support provides the foundation for children to make the most of their abilities and talents as they grow.

Our Early Years Foundation Stage incorporates the learning, development and care of your child from the age of two and a half to five years old.

At Widford Lodge, our Early Years stage comprises a Pre-School and Reception, and focuses on preparing your child for school, through carefully planned activities.

Activities are structured around seven key areas of learning:

  • Communication and language
  • Physical development
  • Personal, social and emotional development
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive arts and design.

We provide a happy and stimulating start to school life.  Classrooms are bright, spacious and engaging, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere and the support of caring, enthusiastic and well qualified staff.

Children are given opportunities to develop their skills, confidence, self-esteem and develop a positive attitude towards learning through a range of planned activities and time to play.

There is a dedicated garden and playground for Early Years with climbing frames, gardening areas, outdoor role play, games and equipment. We hold weekly Early Years assemblies, shared play times, induction visits and Sports Day.

Like the rest of the school, our youngest children also wear the Widford Lodge uniform, simple and practical, so our youngest pupils feel a special part of the school and can participate fully in all the activities on offer.

Pre-School

Our Pre-School incorporates the learning, development and care of your child from the age of two and a half to four years old.

Children learn through planned activities and play, based around the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum.

Children are encouraged to explore their ideas, be inquisitive and put their creative talents to imaginative use.  Planned activities encourage social interaction with others and build confidence, instilling a love of school and learning.

Early phonic sounds, reading, writing, shape and number skills are taught in small groups, with each child working towards their individual goals.

Children are taught in small classes and enjoy lessons in music, dance, art, drama and French.

Pre-School opens its doors from 8am, with a choice of a morning session (finishing at 12 noon) or a full day (until 3.15pm). A ‘late-stay’ option is available, until 4.15pm, for the convenience of busy parents and carers.

There is an on-going programme of special visits – such as meeting guide dogs and members of the emergency services – stimulating curiosity in the wider world.

Reception

Our Reception provides a secure foundation for learning for children aged four and five.

Activities continue to be centred on the Early Years Foundation Stage framework and are structured around seven key areas of learning:

  • Communication and language
  • Physical development
  • Personal, social and emotional development
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive arts and design.

Classes start at 8.45am with children staying for a full day, finishing at 3.15pm.

Extended ‘early start’ and ‘late stay’ options are available, where parents can drop off their children at 8am and pick up at 5.30pm.

The Reception is situated in a bright and spacious, purpose built building with indoor and outdoor facilities.

We are always looking to find new and inventive ways of learning. We promote technology, using our own SMART Boards, computers, robots, cameras and printers to enhance learning.
